The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the most diverse forms of drug-induced rashes, including those that are rare but severe and life-threatening, as well as those that are more frequent, which every doctor encounters in his clinical practice, regardless of a specialist orientation.
A further goal is to acquaint students with reactions to new classes of drugs, including biological drugs (such as TNF antagonists, and other anti-cytokines which are increasingly being used in the treatment of numerous inflammatory diseases in rheumatology, clinical immunology, gastroenterology and dermatology) and new oncological drugs (targeted therapy and tumor immunotherapy).
Course content:
etiology and mechanisms of side effects to drugs (immunological and non-immunological, idiosyncratic)
acneiform, psoriasiform and lichenoid rashes, drug-induced lupus, vasculitis, pemphigus and pemphigoid
photosensitivity, hair and nail changes, pigmentation disorders
life-threatening drug reactions: Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, systemic drug hypersensitivity syndrome (DRESS/DIHS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis
skin reactions to radiocontrast agents
skin side effects of biological drugs (tumor necrosis factor antagonists and others)
skin side effects of traditional and new oncology drugs (epidermal growth factor receptor antagonists, BRAF inhibitors, multikinase inhibitors, mTOR inhibitors, PD-1 antagonists)
During class, each student is required to prepare and present a seminar paper on a given topic in the form of a Powerpoint presentation in front of other participants, which must also include 3 take-away messages.
Based on the quality of the presented seminar and activity during class discussions, the student can receive a maximum of 70 points.
The final exam is a written test. It consists of 10 questions and carries a total of 30 evaluation points. The student passesthe exam if he/she answers at least 8 questions correctly, i.e. obtains 16 grade points. The grade points obtained in the exam are added to the points obtained in the class, and their sum makes up the total grade.
